What to Wear Horse Riding?
Comfort, safety, and style in the saddle. The right gear matters more than you think.
A properly fitted riding helmet is the most important piece of gear. In the U.S., most barns require an ASTM-certified helmet, even for casual riding. Falls happen quickly, and a helmet is not something to skip.
Never ride without a certified helmet, no matter your experience level.
Riding boots with a small heel help prevent your foot from sliding through the stirrup. Sneakers and sandals are a bad idea and can be dangerous if you get caught in a stirrup.

- Tall Boots
- Smooth Sole
- Defined Heel
Comfort and movement matter more than fashion. Most riders wear riding breeches or jeans made for riding. Regular jeans can work for light riding, but riding-specific pants reduce rubbing and hold up better over time.
For tops, go with something fitted but flexible. Loose shirts can bunch up or flap in the wind, which can distract both rider and horse. In cooler weather, layers work best so you can adjust as you warm up.
Rain gear should allow movement and not make loud noises that could startle your horse.
Gloves provide better grip on the reins and prevent blisters during long rides.
If you’re new, focus on safety and comfort. You’ll figure out your style over time.
The right clothing won't make you an expert rider, but it can make every ride safer and more enjoyable. Focus on safety first, and the rest will follow.
